This Canadian act started with founders, Shawn & Jeff, meeting in the summer of 1996 with an instant bond forming. Several other musicians came and went but the bass position was finally settled with the inclusion Norm Michaud in March 1999. S&M was first licensed to mass produce this, their debut album.
Their debut is excellent. Looking through their biography to find their influences was a simple unnecessary exercise in intellectual bravado for it's very clear that they are influenced by Metallica and Megadeth. Other influcences are quoted by verious members of the band, including Slayer and Iron Maiden, to name just two more. The former two are the most noticeable. There's a mix of all eras of those influences but new Metallica and mid-life Megadeth (ala Countdown To Extinction) are most prominant.
It is an example of professionally made, well recorded Thrash Metal. A surprisingly strong first effort from this band! Jeff Klingbeil's voice, at times, sound remarkably like Dave Mustane's even if it isn't as strong. The guitar playing reminds you of later Metallica, and I think I even heard a few Iron Maiden riffs slipped in. The best tracks here are Descendants of Death and Rusted Icons but Fire To The Coals is worthy of mention too. Make no mistake this is not a clone band, they are their own unique act who have maximized their influences to create a strong, professional first outing; a classy Thrash act for sure!
Highlighted Tracks: Descendants Of Death, Fire To The Coals, Rusted Icons.
